Eternal Seed is a company that grew out of a personal, family interest in heirloom seed varieties. The hybrid varieties offered by todays seed vendors have been bred for shipability. Not an attractive criteria when no more than 100 feet separates our garden from our kitchen.

We were interested in flavours, textures and aroma and we wanted to be able to sow the seed from our produce to grow next years garden.  Hence our focus on heirloom seeds.

As we read more we developed a real concern for the ongoing reduction in bio-genetic diversity. For instance, most currently available corn varieties are derived from the same three original varieties. If a disease attacks one of these base varieties a major portion of the North American corn crop is at risk. It is extremely important that the diversity of the heirlooms of the past be preserved in order to maintain variety in our food source.

Research continues - it is very difficult to find more of the older varieties. If we have only small quantities of organic seed we may also have the same variety in non-organic.

We have acquired a few seeds from the national seed bank - some interesting old Canadians. Stay tuned for the results.

We aim to provide only untreated seed but we consider saving the heirloom varieties to be our paramount concern. If we can only get the seed in a treated form we will. If possible we will let you know up front that it is treated, if not please feel free to return it. Again, some varieties are only available in limited quantities.
